能源基金會於1991年由約翰與凱瑟琳·麥克阿瑟基金會(The John D．and Catherine T．MacArthur

Foundation)、皮氏慈善基金會(The Pew Charitable Trusts)和洛克菲勒基金會(The Rockefeller Foundation)***同創建。喬伊斯·默茲吉爾墨基金會(The Joyce Mertz-Gilmore Foundation)和麥克耐特基金會(The McKnight Foundation)分別在1997年和1998年作為基金合夥人加入。
